Should teachers be solely responsible for teaching students to behave civilly in public? On the surface, the answer appears obvious. In a civilized society, of course students should learn how to behave in properly. However, some things should be considered before assuming this is the final answer.
Methods to Teach Character Education
Who should teach a child how to behave? The child’s teacher should model good character and give instruction in how to behave in class, move about the building, and act on the school grounds. Consider that most ethical behavior is set by the age of 6. With the exception of preschool, children enter public school after this age. Once this character has been set, as observed by Kohlberg in his moral development schema, little change will occur (Huitt, W., 2004).
Teachers can show videos about character. Students can go to church and Sunday school classes. Children can be given books to read. Like so many other skills, however, character is learned through the behavior of those around them (i.e. caught not taught).
