Opponents of stem cell research think that because the embryos have the possibility of surviving if implanted, they should be considered human life. Proponents of the research argue that the embryos are not yet a fetus.

Stem Cells

These unspecialized cells have the potential to develop into many different cell types in the body and also serve as an internal repair system in healing wounds and replenishing cells with short life spans such as red blood cells, bone marrow, and skin cells. However in some other organs such as the pancreas and the heart, stem cells only divide and multiply under certain conditions.

Characteristics

Stem cells grow in all multi-cellular organisms, and they have the ability to renew themselves through mitotic cell division. Each cell has the ability to differentiate into a range of specialized cell types. The DNA is the same in each cell, but different parts of the genetic code operate differently in some cells so that they can take on many forms such as heart tissue, liver cells, nerve cells, muscle tissue, etc.
