Smartphones have been all the buzz for some time, but what makes a phone “smart”? These powerful, all-in-one devices contain most of the functions of a personal computer and/or personal digital assistant. In other words, in addition to making the “oh-so-boring” call, your smartphone may, among other things:

  • act as your personal organizer,
  • run/play audio/video files in standard formats,
  • browse the web,
  • send and receive emails and instant messages,
  • take photos and video,
  • data synch with your laptop or personal computer, and
  • allow you to run applications for word processing documents, games, etc., and loads of other things.

More functions are available because, unlike regular cells, these devices have operating systems, just like computers. They also have more memory and larger screens. Many smartphones have the QWERTY keyboard, that is, the keys are arranged in the same order as you would find them on a computer. And the latest 4G smartphones and networks promise faster speeds, sometimes twice as much as what 3G cellular networks provide.
