As told in Le Morte D'Arthur, Sir Thomas Malory's subplot concerning Lancelot and Guinevere features two competing ideologies prevalent during the Middle Ages. One is the system of courtly love, part of the Romantic literary tradition begun by the French troubadours in the 11th century. The other is the spiritual ideology of Christianity.
Both systems feature an object of devotion, on which its constituents must focus their attention in order to avoid certain negative outcomes. With the system of courtly love, the knight focuses on the lady of the castle, whereas in the Christian code, the focus becomes spiritual; God is the object of devotion.
