Whenever we turn on a current affairs program at the moment inevitably a story appears regarding some form of scam; whether it involves the internet, ATM skimming or even the Nigerian prince scam. We sit back and chuckle to ourselves over how gullible these people must be, however last night I was on the end of an attempted scam and I must say that the tricks they employ are very clever, and there is a fine line between being taken in by the swindle and hanging up the phone. There are tell-tale signs of a scam and I hope that my story can help to shed some light on them, in turn helping people to protect their money.
The Urgent Malware Virus
Last night I received a phone call from a concerned Indian woman urging me to turn on my computer. She was unsure of whether my PC or laptop was the issue, however since I was sitting in front of my laptop she determined it was in fact the one that had been infected by a virus.
This was the first sign; if my windows provider can detect the errors on my computer then surely they would no what sort of PC or laptop I was using. However I, like most students, rely extremely heavily on my laptop and therefore any potential problems are addressed straight away; I'd been slightly sucked in.
