Hiking with a cell phone is somewhat taboo among those who prefer to get away from technology. Most people find that a cell phone can have a lot of very useful abilities on the trail however. Depending on the type of trip a hiker wishes to take, a cell phone may prove to be invaluable.

Most obviously, calling out is a big deal in emergencies, but also in more general situations as well. More and more, a hiker who doesn't have a cell phone is going to run into issues if they make it to a town and need to make a call. Pay phones are growing scarce and in many areas are no longer present at all.
If someone is hiking a trail, cell phones also allow for calls before the hikers have actually reached civilization. This is great for those times when the hiker wishes for someone to meet them at a trail crossing rather than an actual town or other more common area.
