Chronic renal failure is a common condition in elderly cats, though it can also occur in young cats. Unfortunately, once the cat is showing signs of kidney disease then 75 percent of kidney function has already been lost. Unless the cause is determined and it can be treated, chronic renal failure is a progressive disease though it is possible to delay progression and many cats can have a good quality of life. Treatment is based on delaying further kidney damage and alleviating symptoms caused by the kidney failure.
Diet and Fluids for a Cat with Kidney Disease
Cats with chronic renal failure often experience weight loss, vomiting, poor appetite and lethargy. A number of studies have shown that a specialized renal diet can increase the cats survival and improve their quality of life. A renal diet is lower in both protein and phosphorous compared to conventional diets. However, it is essential that cats eat, and if a cat will not eat a renal diet there are a number of foods with reduced phosphorus or protein, such as senior diets. Some cats with chronic renal failure do require medication to help with vomiting, stomach acidity, and some require an appetite stimulant.
Cats with chronic renal failure often produce large volumes of dilute urine and can be dehydrated. Cats can be encouraged to increase their fluid consumption by adding water to their food, use of water fountains and different water bowls around the house. Some severely dehydrated cats may require admission to a veterinarian clinic where intravenous fluids are administered. Some cats especially those with advanced chronic renal failure may require subcutaneous fluids, which can be administered at home.
